​57 arrested, 7 jailed over tax offences in Benue

No less than fifty-two (52) persons have so far been arrested by law enforcement agents in relation to tax offences in Benue State, thetriumphnews.com reports. 
The arrests which were made between June 2016 – April, 2017 included offences such as conspiracy, extortion, mischief as well as impersonation and forgery at illegal revenue checkpoints and unauthorized revenue collection centers across the state.

A detailed breakdown of arrests and prosecutions issued by the Legal Unit of the Benue State Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, indicates that seven (7) persons among those arrested were convicted and sentenced to two (2) years in prison by Magistrate court in Makurdi.

According to the report, about thirty-six (36) other offenders are still under police investigation while other cases are awaiting legal advice from the ministry of justice for prosecution to commence accordingly.

Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of BIRS, Mrs. Mimi Adzape-Orubibi has said there are only eleven (11) authentic revenue inspection points throughout the state, warning those engaged in illegal acts to desist or face the law.
