​In Okpokwu: After Police cancels event, Deputy Speaker conducts APC LG primaries (WATCH VIDEO)

The conduct of primaries for the aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) across Benue State was marred by acts of violence and gross irregularities. 

In Okpokwu local government, the process which began by 11am, last Thursday was cancelled by the Police Area Commander after some supporters suspected to be hired thugs threatened and harassed participants including party officials.

In his words: “Because of the security reports on my table, which I have of course communicated to the Governor of the state and the Deputy Governor directly, we are putting off the election. If you stay here, we cannot guarantee you your safety.”

However, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. James Ejembi Okefe took over the event to ensure the selection of his preferred candidate, Hon. Ogwuche Olofu Francis.

Meanwhile, Governor Samuel Ortom has constituted a Complaint Committee to handle all grievances arising from the Councillorship and Chairmanship primary elections of the All Progressive Congress (APC). 

The Governor who spoke through his adviser on Politics and Inter-Party Affairs, Hon. Saawuan Tarnongu requested all aggrieved aspirants to forward their written complaints to the Committee for immediate commencement of work.

The Committee is headed by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Benson Abounu.
