The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has stated that Governor Samuel Ortom has failed.
The party said since Ortom was sworn in, he had made numerous promises without achieving one.
Bemgba Iortyom, PDP’s State Publicity Secretary, in a statement on Monday to celebrate workers’ day lambasted the governor for failing to pay workers their wages.
Iortyom said the PDP, “Appreciates your steadfastness and patriotic spirit in the face of a harsh and worsening economic recession which is daily taking away whatever little purchasing power the average citizen has left.
“This is a situation made worse in Benue State by the failure of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-controlled administration of Gov. Samuel Ortom to pay basic workers wages for close to a year running.
“Workers the world over ought to be respected and their welfare given premium attention, considering their distinctive role as the engine room and driving force of every government.
“This is one fact the PDP kept clearly in view throughout the sixteen years it held power in the state, particularly in the eight years of the administration of Gov. Gabriel Suswam which gave such quality attention to workers welfare that to date it ranks as the most worker-friendly administration in the history of the state since its creation.
“We heard of the recent unprecedented decision of Gov. Ortom to declare a state of emergency on the payment of salaries to workers and we urge him not to make this another of his numerous promises, non of which is yet to see the light of day.
“We like to believe that the Ortom administration, with the right level of will and sincerity of purpose could devise ingenious ways of harnessing internal revenue resources to augment income accruals from external sources, and be able to meet the legitimate needs and demands for enhanced workers welfare.
“At the local government level we are requesting that the people of Benue will vote PDP into power at the 3rd June, 2017 Local Government Elections as such a development will pave way for checks and balances.
“It is our pledge and assurance that PDP controlled Local Government Council administrations will not tolerate illegal deductions by the state government from statutory allocations meant for the development of the councils, and we believe the APC-controlled State Government on seat presently will on the other hand not permit mismanagement of funds at the local government councils under the control of the PDP.”
